What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is one of the oldest healing practices in the world, used as both a healing and preventative medicine for over 5000 years. Today millions of people are successfully treated with the practice of acupuncture as a standalone treatment or incorporated with other medical treatments.

Through stimulation of specific and well mapped points on the body acupuncture encourages the body’s own natural healing and defence mechanisms.

Balance

“Balance” is a word that is often over used but under valued. Traditional Eastern medicine (TEM) believes that both physical and emotional health can only be maintained if the body as a whole is working in harmony and balance. This balance is predominantly determined by a subtle energy known as chi or qi that runs in regular patterns through channels known as meridians. Meridians have been mapped and measured by modern technological methods. Each meridian or energy channel is associated with a different organ. If the meridians are blocked or imbalanced due to any number of reasons and the vital energy is not adequately feeding each organ; illness, disease, poor health & muscular pain can occur.

How does it work?

Acupuncture stimulates and influences the energy flow with the use of very fine needles that are inserted into precise points along the Meridian lines. Each point relates to a different function of the body. It is also believed that acupuncture stimulates the release of chemicals such as endorphins & neurotransmitters which help to reduce pain and influence the body’s own internal regulating and healing system. The number of needles used varies for each person.

Acupuncture can be used for treating existing conditions and also for illness prevention through maintaining the body balanced state of good health.
